God so many. There must've been something in the water for middle grade of the early 2000s bc it was all so formative, but the 2 that come to mind are Holes, & The Giver. His Dark Materials, Les Miserables and Mrs Dalloway are formative as an adult. Tore out my heart and made me examine it closely.

Tldr restore Butlerian queer theory in my SFF please. More queerness on family and family abolitionism, between heterosexuality and private property, move queer beyond an isolated romance subgenre that reproduces heterosexual norms. (That can stay, but give me more)
I loved this convo with @mkhardywrites.bsky.social for THE NEEDFIRE bc they were focused on making sexuality inextricable from social conditions, queerness as deviation from all norms and making that an essential part of the gothic in the story. I hope they write about it more (no pressure dudes).
My #1 question in edits is always, "what does it mean to be queer in this world?" The former to me makes queerness normative as a sexual category among equal others & the latter more comprehensive exploration of queerness. I desperately need more SFF that considers queerness beyond sexuality alone.
Whew, all of the books I edited for 2024 have gone to print! It's very satisfying to see them all together. So proud to have worked with all these amazing authors!
