A simpler way of looking at it is if our choices are to throw 1 or 2 fingers then the even player is always looking to match their opponent while the odd team is always looking to not match them.
Oh, I see! I was missing one detail. I had thought "the odd player" meant the player who threw odd that round. I didn't realize it was a persistent state. Thank you, now it makes sense.
