Journals pay staff expenses, but getting paid by subjects isn't journalism. That's more like an ad. Note that I felt bad asking the question since I'm sure the person is in good faith and is very passionated about the, pretty cool, subject.
Is it ethical for a journalist to accept a free trip? www.spj.org seems to say it isn't. I have no idea if this a reliable source.
