No matter where or how you get told your account (bank or otherwise) has been compromised, ALWAYS ALWAYS take the extra minute to find the number for their fraud dept ON THEIR SITE (or your card, etc) and then call them YOURSELF. “But the caller ID said” no, hang up, look up the number, and call
Hey, thanks for posting this because it reminded me to reread Atomic Robo. Also, it’s sadly necessary advice.
it is neither illegal in any meaningful sense nor even remotely difficult to spoof phone numbers anymore. a tech savvy teen shithead or someone in a call center on the other side of the planet could call you displaying the number from the Oval Office itself. Trust No Inbound Call
I know, it's deeply horrifying to think someone out there has your info and is draining your savings so every second counts, but here's the thing. If a fraud department has genuinely contacted you, then they've already locked down your account/card/whatever. Confirm the fraud dept number; then call
It annoys me that some services really will call you and ask you for a few security details to verify it's you. I feel like it teaches people bad habits.
If it's about a credit card the number is literally on the back of the card for this reason!
Agreed, as someone who works in an financial institution I will never be mad that someone politely excuses themselves to call back. Stay safe above all.
