I can never remember the philosopher/theologian (call him X) who was trying to escape an angry mob by rowing across a foggy lake at night. When X’s pursuers came from the other direction and asked if he knew where X was (he wasn’t recognized), X replied, “He’s not far!” and kept rowing. Not a lie!

St Athanasius. What he uses was "mental reservation in the broad sense" where the deceit comes from a deliberate ambiguity. This is still OK for the Catholic church. Mental reservation in the narrow sense ("this man is not a priest [of Apollo]") is no longer OK. (now just considered lying)
