I have often said, the fact that modern zoning encourages the largest residential buildings near some of our biggest sources of pollution is a major environmental justice issue. We can’t keep doing this. It’s fine to put apartments on residential streets.
In new research on housing & highway locations @urbaninstitute.bsky.social, we show that: 1—Zoning concentrates dense housing near highways 2—Larger buildings are disproportionately built near highways 3—People of color & low-income people are disproportionately exposed to highway pollution
