I canā€™t claim credit for noticing the phrase below; that was @bdmcclay.bsky.social, who noted in her review of this book that we can assume itā€™s about the New Yorker & is thus perfect. ā€œOrdinarily devoted to a style of writing that combined indifference with hysteria.ā€ ā€”Ken Greenhall, Childgrave

Also today: @bdmcclay.bsky.social tells the most entertaining and confounding story yet about her silly & sweet dog, Boswell. You wonā€™t believe what heā€™s been getting up to.

In her newsletter @bdmcclay.bsky.social is as usual sensible & insightful about Taylor Swift. She also offers some I think unimpeachable personal rules of criticism. The first is also the number 1 rule for getting the most out of Road House (1989): ā€œTry to assume that everything is on purpose.ā€

i keep laughing at this but it has to be said there's no "but" hereā€¦ patrick bateman is a swiftieā€¦ it gives me no pleasure to report this but you know it's true www.reddit.com/r/swiftiecir...

American psycho but Patrick Bateman is a swiftie: You like Taylor Swift? Her early work was a little too country for my taste. But when 1989 came out in 2014, I think she really came into her own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. She's been compared to Selena Gomez, but I think Taylor has a far more sarcastic, self-deprecating sense of humor. In 2017, Taylor released this; Reputation, her most accomplished album. I think her undisputed masterpiece is "Delicate". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the insecurities and uncertainty of starting a new love. It's also a personal statement about the singer herself.
