For the people who have made or are making webcomics/comic now, How much writing for things do you typically before you start making panels? I wanna start my own, but im not sure how much writing i need before I actually start.... I have a rough outline but thats about it. Do i need more?

It's usually different for everyone, but for me I write the rough draft, ask friends for their opinions, edit and make a final script. Then I work on thumbnails and that's when I finally draw the pages. My scripts only have enough detail to help me draw the thumbnails.

i don't write anything down until i'm putting the text on the page. this probably isn't a very good idea. but it works for me!

Should I make a full script, is a rough plot draft enough? How much pre-planning is good enough? Ive definitely psyched myself out cause I feel i dont have enough, so im curious to know where I should rly start...

If you have your rough outline, I would definitely write out a full script first and adjust it as you go. Doesn't have to be from beginning to end. If it's a series, script a full chapter. If it's a short story, maybe just script the first act and go from there.

Hmm I got experience from just drawing without even thumbnails, and it can be fun but also time consuming if youโ€™re a bit perfeccionist, because you want a result X but had no planning going on for this. lol BUT itโ€™s fun and challenging. If you want avoid to having problems, itโ€™s best to be prepared

Mine is a diary thing, so I just doodle a rough script every morning and draw it up once Iโ€™m happy with it. If youโ€™re planning something with more of a narrative, maybe write down where the big storyโ€™s going before you start, but you can probably just script it an installment at a time.

It really depends on you, your process, & what your goals are/what kind of story it is you want to tell! Do you feel like you need to have things mapped out in advance, or does figuring out as you go seem more natural for you? Thereโ€™s no universal answer, just yours

I write on the page as I go based on horrifically loose plot outlines and magpie level of snippet hoarding. I think learning to improvise on your feet, is probably a more realistic endeavor than having a 10 year investment planned out to the letter. Youโ€™ll change, and so will your comic !

For my own work, I just have a broad outline of how I want the story to go and work it out with thumbnails of pages as I go. I'm also working on the layouts for a friend who has written a full prose novela bc that's the most efficient way for them to script. Just depends on what works for you!

It kinda depends on the project and on your writing style. If I'm doing a self-contained project like a 24 page comic book I'll outline and thumbnail everything page-by-page first (tho I don't usually write final dialog until after I've penciled so I can fill the space I left.) ...
