I think they should keep the invite codes for a good long while. It has two innate advantages - it severely limits bots, and it means you have to have at least one friend to join, something that many of the worst people on Twitter couldn't manage.

I don’t see a good reason to ever stop them, given their plans to roll out federation next year; in fact at that point I think they could probably even away with giving out fewer of them. (For cost reasons alone it’s going to be tough for bsky.app to grow indefinitely without ads)

Yeah but invite codes are just death for social media sites if used for a long while. People will come to dismiss bluesky entirely if they don't open the app up at some point.

The other benefit is that the team knows who invited trolls or other bad actors.
