short novels are good! there should be way more short novels. lots and lots of books (esp. fantasy series) are 600 pages when they should be 150-200.
Also can we normalise stand-alone books in the same setting and common characters. I’m not saying I want more Discworld but like Discworld (it doesn’t even need to be funny, I would take humanly sincere).
Tolkien is rarely lauded for pacing, but I have noted before that by page 50ish of Fellowship, ball is definitely visibly rolling, and in a lot of notable more recent fantasy (Name of the Wind comes to mind) we're not even through the intro yet.
Novels: 350 pages or less Films: 2 hrs or less Pop songs: 3 minutes or less Anything more than and you'd better have a damned good reason.
I like Brando Sando but he and other fantasy authors are clearly in a dick measuring contest by proxy with book size; I've started reading other genres like murder mysteries just to have something shorter
