My only guess was that it was to protect him? To be able to actually bring him in when the next leader f*cks up, ahead of the next election. That has to be it (or they have lost their collective minds. That would work too)

Problem is that the next election is four and a have years away, and whoever wins this will probably be gone by next Easter.
