The reason the internet is bad right now is because the public square has been effectively purchased by the most nihilistic, grudge-seeking, divorced people in the world. It's not inherently the technology, it's who we allowed to win the debate about moderation—rich people who are very, very racist.

Those owners have tolerated and/or encouraged a vast cohort of abusive posters and trolls who won't be going away any time soon, and also harmed or at least deeply discouraged a generation of moderators. So even under hypothetical new management, reform will take many years.

I think it's important to remember as English-speakers, we're getting the *good* moderation. In many parts of the world, you can organize violence openly on platforms like Facebook because language support for local dialects is minimal or non-existent.
Yep, and to follow that thread back a bit - those people purchased it because they had the money, and that kind of person is who usually winds up with the money, because that is what is rewarded. Having tapped my "capitalism is the problem" sign, I now return you to the scheduled conversation lol
