NSF GRFP changed the submission process so that letters of rec. are due ~10 days BEFORE the student application deadline. So dumb. Students need to start their submissions so the recommenders will be notified by NSF about the request. Hyp.: # of 2023 applications > # of 2024 applications

Not only SfN is expensive, but the carbon footprint is insane. It should be organized every other year, giving a chance to all trainees to go at least once in their PhD (and then postdoc).

Im skipping SFN this year. I have no plans to return in the future or to bring my lab either. The conference has gotten so expensive that it's no longer cheaper than the smaller specialty conferences where it's a lot easier to meet new people.
