Walters began working in television journalism at a time when sexist studio heads did not think women could report on hard news. But Walters wouldn't be dissuaded. 2/4

Barbara’s first professional break came in 1961, writing for The Today Show. Barbara wanted to cover hard news, but the producers offered her an opportunity to appear on air as a “Today Girl.” She just needed to look attractive, make small talk, and read commercials. Finally, she convinced NBC to allow her to travel with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy to India and Pakistan to report on the trip. By 1964, Barbara regularly appeared on The Today Show. It took another decade for Barbara to officially be called a co-host of the show. By then, the network had no other option; viewers were demanding Barbara get more on-air time. As her career progressed, she hosted the news program 20/20 and launched The View, a talk show with a panel of female hosts.
