I think sometimes people do fall into limiting, chronological narratives abt the liturgy - certain time periods are sort of presented as the unchangeable ideal (including the present, post-Vatican II era)

one idea which seems to dog my thinking is the notion that ritual demands a deep attention also to its particular rhythms and language - I suppose thus that the form of the ritual communication is an essential part of understanding the idea
