In Germany, I had a monthly Deutschland Ticket. For €49, I could use all public transport up to and including regional trains throughout the country, not only in Berlin, for an entire calendar month. A day return ticket to work today cost more than half of that.

The cost of train fares here (I assume you're back in the UK) is just obscene. Even with the senior rail card for which I now qualify ....... 😳
