looking at some 'ML theory' grad course syllabi and why are almost all of these just convex optimization classes wearing a trenchcoat lol
i guess what feels comforting about ML research, even theory-heavy work, is the instinct that if i spend enough time with it (and am willing to do the linear algebra) i can get the general gist of most papers, whereas theoretical physics & research math really did/does feel like a bottomless abyss
