My dad had a bunch of sci-fi anthology pulp paperbacks when I was a kid, and Hubbard had a few stories in them. I don't remember a single thing about them, though, which probably explains why he turned to leading a cult: more money in it.

I actually read Battlefield: Earth and it's real bad. The movie does it justice because at least the movie is entertainingly bad.
