It's been a VERY long time since I've thought about this, but I recall at the time that Metallica's very public hatred of Napster felt exceedingly disingenuous b/c unlike most artists they owned the rights to their music.
So, sure, for them to bitch about Napster hurting them was legit. But for Metallica to bitch about Napster being bad for the entire music industry was like "WTF mate?" because it was fucking over labels way, way more than artists, and the labels were near-universally flat-out evil at the time.
