Been meaning to write "Love Your Dead Trees," an article about how they are superb habitat & a source of life on the landscape—something people too rarely appreciate. Turning dead trees into furniture rather than wood chips is certainly making better use of them. But it's not protecting nature.

I recently encountered the idea that a lineage—47 million years of hummingbirds, for instance—can be understood as a single entity, and each individual unit as a hypothesis about the world. I’m still trying to understand precisely what that means…. What hypothesis is this hummingbird?
