Rambunctious and destructive. Gremlins were the bane of aviation machinery, causing malfunction after malfunction.

[Top Section] Gremlin. Region: Aviation Folklore

[Middle Section] Illustration of a gremlin in a jumpsuit with a wrench and toolbox. Accompanied by descriptive text.

Became popular in WWII, though legends could possibly exist earlier.

Blamed for mechanical malfunctions in airplanes during flight. They were said to live within the machinery.

Descriptions are wide and inconsistent. One pilot might describe them as bright colored and knee high. Another might say waist high, grey, and with ears like a bat.

These impish creatures shouldered the blame in place of the pilots pointing fault at one another.

[Bottom Section] Some depictions in popular culture: Some Time Never: A Fable for Supermen (1948); Gremlins (1984) and Gremlins 2 (1990); Twilight Zone: "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" (1963); The Gremlins (1943)
