Trust is KEY in public health. It is imperative ALL dairy workers are able to freely report symptoms and isolate, and to have easy access to testing and the current seasonal flu vaccine. Very important to get robust economic incentives in place to allow this. www.latimes.com/environment/...

Although California dairy farmers had heard about the H5N1 bird flu before it hit, none was prepared for the devastation it would cause in some herds.

I didn't realise I'd been quoted in this article (regarding the risk of a coinfection with seasonal flu and H5N1 potentially leading to a reassortment event). www.telegraph.co.uk/global-healt....

If the 10-15% CFR in dairy cattle quoted in this article is correct, something has changed; this is higher than previous outbreaks in dairy herds in the US. As noted in a previous post, the lack of biosecurity is beyond shocking. abc30.com/dead-cows-si...

The Barmouth, Castlerock, Northern Ireland.

A landscape photograph taken at sunset. The sun has just set to top right of shot, and the light of the setting sun is reflecting on the waves of the ocean between the foreground and the horizon. A headland juts out into the sea on left on shot. A fisherman casts his rod from a breakwater in the foreground.

Counterpoint: this is yet another soulless hotel in Portrush, which no doubt will be essentially vacant for six months of the year. The bar and music venue it's replacing was a hub for the live music scene on the North Coast and a beloved pub for everyone who lives or lived here.

Just after the first lockdown in Northern Ireland - back in 2020 - I relocated from Belfast to my hometown of Ballymena. Because I run my own business, and work entirely remotely, I was able to take long walks during the day, and often passed this heron. Always in the same place. A pensive bird.

A heron standing in the water just beside a weir. The background is a thicket with some wildflowers. The water rushes around the heron's feet, causing distinctive patterns in the water.
