“I quickly learned most undergraduates in my classes still hold the pre-Lewontin belief that human genetic variation predominately sorts geographically. Many students also thought race was based in genetic differences & that single mutations could explain complex traits in humans”

People Are Not Peas—Why Genetics Education Needs an Overhaul

The dated genetics taught in U.S. schools stokes misconceptions about race and human diversity. A biological anthropologist calls for change.

Great discussion last night at Conway Hall on “What does the first ‘atheist age’ mean for the UK?”, organised by the Explaining Atheism project, featuring @brunelcce.bsky.social@aiyanakoka.bsky.social@wgervais.bsky.social along with Lois Lee, Chine McDonald, Daisy Scalchi & Cariad Lloyd

Panel of 6 people sitting on a stage with PowerPoint slide behind featuring two children having a discussion while apparently sitting on clouds

Science is messy! From my Chapter 1: “Science fundamentally won't be distilled to rote proceduralism, of the sort that could be automatized or bureaucratized; it's far too human to be so reduced—and for this I'm grateful! The poetry underlying science comes from its inevitable human imperfections.”

Science is very much not a static document—a stone tablet of enshrined scientific findings that reflect truth. Science isn't a set of facts. Nor is it a cookie cutter, step-by-step process, like the overly simplified Scientific Method we're taught in grade school.® Science fundamentally won't be distilled to rote proceduralism, of the sort that could be automatized or bureau-cratized; it's far too human to be so reduced—and for this I'm grateful! The poetry underlying science comes from its inevitable human imperfections.* Science is a messy process of discovery, revision, and (at its best) enlighten-ment. It is far more like a complex tapestry that is being woven on one end while being torn apart at other ends, all with threads that we are learning to spin from raw materials on the fly. We are constantly learning that past methods and theoretical assumptions were mistaken, undermining conclusions drawn from them.
