Political reporting is premised on the idea that reporters have privileged access to the national mood. I’m not sure I believe it?

I just love how Democrats stated policy is “the Republicans play politics with the border and we offer serious solutions” and then they ignore literally everything everyone who works on border issues tells them to do so they can puff out their chests to show everyone how tough they are.

High on their own supply. The Biden Administration timed the Asylum Ban to come out when environmental conditions & other factors were causing arrivals to fall — so that it would look like it was working — and now they think the ban that caused arrivals to drop. Lots of people will be hurt by this.

Thanks for this, Colin — a lot of resonances with the US citizenship / status regime too

Possibly you’re thinking of mandatory spending (eg Medicare) or possibly also obligated funds (eg where the govt has a contract to spend money for services in the future). And these can be required but unfunded if there’s no approps bill!

This puzzled me for a moment — appropriating money *is* funding (ie, it allocates money from the US Treasury to a Department, agency, program etc) But I suspect this might be a vocabulary thing rather than a lack of understanding — for example…

I think I disagree? The alternative is unfunded mandates when congress passes bills with fiscal impact. like if you (say) changed CHIP to include more kids, they should include revenue for that.

For all the moral panic about legalizing marijuana, it seems that the much less critiqued legalization of sports betting will end up wreaking a great deal of devastation. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Legalizing Sports Gambling Was a Huge Mistake
Legalizing Sports Gambling Was a Huge Mistake

The evidence is convincing: The betting industry is ruining lives.
