Romero is actually really picky about his clothes. All his shirts are good quality linen, silk and cotton (which is why he gets so upset when they get ruined...)
The store that Romero runs, Midnight Collectables, opened in 1954, it almost didn't make it with everything that was going on at the time (and also why Romero doesn't have much nostalgia for the 1950s)
