2000 years before Ray Kroc, the Ancient Romans invented fast food in the form of thermopolium ('hot food shops'), which sold ready-to-eat food for residents of apartments (insulae) who had no kitchens. They kept the portions small, but that was enough forum.

A man in blue tunic behind a counter serves a group of patrons in colorful tunics. Food is arranged on the counters, and some of the men have drinking cups. The location is a taberna or marketplace, and there are other shops (a butcher) across from our hot food counter.

Thinking that all these moments are now lost like lacrimae sunt in pluvia makes me sad.
