As far as I know, Pte Nathanael Kern of Ontario was the last FWW Canadian soldier killed on active duty in France. He was a laborer with the Canadian War Graves Detachment. While clearing the battlefields in June 1919, he was fatally gassed by an exploding phosgene cylinder. Houchin Brit Cemetery

one reads, "I was standing about five feet from the gas cylinder when Lieut. Gatien shouted "Gas" and ran down the ravine. He afterwards came back and plugged the cylinder. I did not see how the cylinder exploded.
