“We’re not going to turn away the opportunity to work with countries who don’t share our values on everything,” Sullivan told Issie Lapowsky for this new profile on the National Security adviser and his efforts to build a coalition around countering China. www.wired.com/story/jake-s...

China is racing to unseat the United States as the world’s technological superpower. Not if Jake Sullivan can help it.

I spent hours listening to the North Carolina broadcast last week, hearing people ask for hams to send messages to family members, requesting insulin, and relaying road closure info. “Mom, your son is OK. No phone service. Happy birthday." www.wired.com/story/hurric...

While some residents in hurricane-impacted areas can't send texts or make calls, amateur radio enthusiasts are helping communicate requests for help and messages between loved ones.

also made me think of one of my all-time favorite twitter threads

Twitter thread by @fakemikemulloy says “Kyle Korver has been playing like he was somebody's dad since he was 18.
Probably wore double stripped tube socks in high school.

You don't understand humility until you've watched a dude who lived through the Cuban Missile Crisis drop flat-footed bank shots on you.

I must have been about 18 years old, my dad's 40+ pick up game needed an extra guy so I tagged along.

The dude I was covering had to be 60 fucking years old. Wearing fucking Converse Weapons, Umbro soccer shorts, and a Looney Tunes t-shirt

And he fucking ruined my life. I went home and never wanted to play basketball ever again. His shots were banking off my fucking soul.

When your white dad turns 40, the federal government sends him a pair of NBs, a geometry book, a Kevin McHale DVD and the rest is up to him.

And since it’s been out a week now, I’ll share the tidbit that made me say “oh my god” loudest, which comes towards the end:

Screen grab of WIRED article that reads: One former employee remembers preparing Titan for multiple successful Titanic missions, prior to 2023. “I put my heart and soul into building that sub,” he says. “Many, many hours inside the sub, outside the sub, building and testing it. She was my baby.”

Each time Titan was about to dip beneath the waves, he would pat her hull lightly. “I’d say, ‘Come on back to me baby, you’ll make it, you can do it.’ And when she’d come back up to the surface, I’d say, ‘Good job. You got everyone back up safe.’”

Until one day, she didn’t.

ah no, i think you’re referring to a totally separate story! this doesn’t have anything to do with that supposed transcript of the Titan’s last moments.

I think you should read the story! It always seemed like a bad idea to me and even I was surprised by how many test results and warnings were glossed over or ignored. Plus Mark found lots of interesting new info on the details of how places like Boeing and UW were involved in earlier years.
