Have had that same experience so many times. Always frustrating and just... Weird, because if our dogs got out I'd be in a total panic--in fact, I've been known to get panicked simply because I couldn't immediately find them and feared I might not have closed the gate or something.

yeah, seemed like an old weird guy who had potentially just woken up so who knows (also possibly a situation where the dog just lives in the backyard :( )

Yeah, finding out the dog is mjust kind of wandering the neighborhood off leash and solo would induce quite a bit of anxiety in most people I’d think. All those cars if nothing else.
