He keeps calling everybody else miserable and worthless. Sounds like he's deeply unhappy and dissatisfied and is projecting, to me.

I think this is it. He is a very unhappy man, is angry that he's unhappy, doesn't understand why he's unhappy, and blames everybody else for his unhappiness.
