no joke, a lot of people would probably be surprised what a good time they'd have starting a business and just basically remaining a decent person, being nice to your employees and customers, and paying a good wage. all you have to do is not expect the business to make you a billionaire
I used to work for a business like this. Great, tight knit executive that looked out for staff, and made well thought-out, ethical decisions. They have been really successful - I still recommend them now, even though I don't work there any more.
I fully agree with this. Most businesses are in the race to the bottom, and we are all worse off for it including the business.
One of the many benefits of public health insurance is that it frees up a lot more people to take a crack at running a business without the immense burden of healthcare costs. When I started a business I only did it on the side, in no small part due to health costs.

After a decade of thinking on it, I opened a used bookshop. Did a lot wrong--never lost money, just never made much--but had a great year doing it. No regrets. And, I got it out of my system and moved to my career (teaching).
Unfortunately, you'd probably have to also fight off the inevitable grindset profit at any cost assholes that would see your pleasant little business and decide that destroying it would be even more profitable.
Quit my full time job and started my own business in November. Just being able to turn down work for shitty people is an amazing thing. I'm making about half what I made before but have never been happier professionally.
