Jupiter: terrifyingly vast. Looms over the inner solar system like a giant fist. Blasting the cosmos with radio noise like a gibbering Lovecraftian god. Kubrick set the climax of 2001 here for a reason. Moons are spooky too. Spookiest planet, thank you

Jupiter as imaged by Voyager I. Visually the planet is composed of alternating bands of red, orange, white, and brown bands. The Great Red Spot is very prominent in the southern hemisphere

Neptune: impossibly cold, lurking in the dark on the edge of the solar system. Last stop before the infinite hateful vacuum of the universe.

True color image of Neptune from Voyager II. The planet is pale blue (similar to Uranus) but it has some visible cloud features, including a huge oval storm (Great Dark Spot)

Saturn: vast, cold, distant, and strange. #1 most alien sky if you could survive there long enough to see it. Would be spookier but a little too beautiful for its own good

Cassini image of Saturn. The sun is behind us and the facing hemisphere and rings are fully lit

Mars: dead Earth. Planet most likely to be haunted

Mars as imaged by the Hope orbiter. The planet is mottled rusty orange. The massive shield volcanoes are visible near the equator

Venus: Earth’s evil twin. You may rank this one higher depending on how big a climate doomer you are

MESSENGER image of Venus. The planet is a virtually featureless pale tan ball. If you squint you can barely make out some texture in the clouds

Mercury: dead ball of rock and iron zipping around the sun. Even ghosts wouldn’t bother with it

Mercury as imaged by MESSENGER. The planet is gray and heavily cratered, and resembles Earth’s moon

Uranus: should be spookier, but name is too funny. Sideways. Relaxing blue color

Uranus as imaged by Voyager II. The planet is a nearly featureless, pale blue disk

Earth: tiny island of hospitality in the vast howling void of space. Least spooky planet

“The Blue Marble” Apollo image of Earth. The Arabian Peninsula, Africa, Madagascar, and Antarctica are all in view

In honor of the season let’s rank the planets in order of spookiness
