This of course does not mean you aren't allowed to like and find meaning in the story. I feel that one should read older works, so you can get a feel for the thoughts and opinions of the time, and discover the culture/society has changed--or hasn't changed.
...Instead of worrying about being accused of racism for liking the book, have you thought about examining and analyzing the book and the worldview of the author? There's no "controversy." Kim was written by a imperialist white dude and there is so much orientalism.
