I’m all ears here. But in my experience the students are irrevocably brainwashed.

I find with each new group of students I work with there is a moment at the start of the term where they are genuinely willing to re-approach their education. The problem is that so many parts of our systems for schooling resist their attempts. I'd say they are traumatized more than brainwashed.
