If they start to culturally regard e-mail like we would have regarded getting telegrams from our professors when we were undergrads, then it's just not a means of communication at all anymore. And I can tell it's starting to be like that: "No, I won't join the group chat thread. Here's a telegram."

“Not the odds, but the stakes” should be the rule for election reporting in our times. Rather than horse-race headlines from the get-go.

A tweet by Jay Rosen, associate professor of journalism at New York University, from 6 March 2023. The text reads:

Not the odds, but the stakes.

That's my shortand for the organizing principle we most need from journalists covering the 2024 election. Not who has what chances of winning, but the consequences for our democracy. Not the odds, but the stakes.

Oh, money is super motivating when you have very little of it, and I think folks underappreciate how much human potential and innovation is *not* done because the person who would love to do it literally can't afford to stop working in a less innovative job

In Australia there is an entire subculture of gender-affirming caravans. Like “yeah you’re on holiday with your family but you’re manly about it!” They are called things like “the defender” and “supreme territory”…🙄

The memory of my mother has visited me many times since 2010… less frequently now…

(For the non-german speakers, that Stern story is about the horrific safety record at Tesla's German factory: 247 ambulance calls the first year, furnace injuries, acid burns, amputations. Union official fears first death is near. Headline reads "how is this possible in Germany?")
