Agreed, but I think it is too easy to blame this failing on new media for merely doing what they do and corporate fundraising doing what they do. Science owes them a better critique than "sure it's published in the 'best' journals but we all suspect something is off there"

I think the issue, over and over again, is that press offices love to push stories based on a single study, when that's fundamentally not how research works. If the press office has coordinated to get an NYT article out the same day the study's published, not much chance for correction ahead of time
