It is Indigenous History Month and this is the story of Mikak, a trailblazing Inuit woman! Mikak was born around 1740 in what is now Labrador. In 1767, her group was attacked by British marines near Chateau Bay. This attack was in retribution of an attack by a different group of Inuit. 1/

In the attack, Mikak and her son were taken prisoner. She began to learn English and taught the British commander who captured her Inuktitut. In 1768, while still a captive, she was introduced to Commodore Hugh Palliser, the governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. 2/
