'Columnar jointing' is a phenomenon where cooling liquid magma fractures in lines of force parallel to the surface, often in regular polygonal 'tubes' that reflect magma chemistry. The size and shape of the columns are determined by composition and cooling rate. (📷: Perspectives, Giant's Causeway)
