The way you defeat fascist movements is by disrupting fascist organizing, and — failing that, as history has shown — by killing fascists. Nothing else has ever worked. Countering fascist disinformation was never meant to be a way to disrupt fascist movements. It operates at the intellectual layer.

I’m curious about the ‘disrupting fascist organizing’ part. Are you suggesting there are two approaches: 1. violent; 2. non-violent but not liberal? How would each of these work?

Countering disinformation is an important part of the defense, it can inoculate some of the population and slow down the malignancy. But as you say, the infection still needs to be cut out using offensive means.

There are non-violent ways to disrupt fascist movements. I won't list them all here (go read @crimethinc.bsky.social). But defeating fascism, even non-violently, requires illiberal means. And that's why fascism takes hold in liberal democracis - using your own liberal sensitivities against you.

Exactly.

But countering fascist disinformation might help recruit people to efforts to disrupt fascist organizing.
