I would so, so love to see a faithful adaptation actually set in ca. 1890!
The Thunder Child took out two or three tripods. In modern adaptations "nothing we do can hurt them!" So the difference to me is that TC stood against terrible odds, but had a chance however slim. That's heroism, whereas certain failure is just stupidity.

Maybe one of my favorite scenes in all of literature. And, weirdly, one that every modern interpretation gets wrong. It's always "Nothing stops them! But we'll die anyway!" But the Thunder Child DID affect the Martians. They knew they would die, but also knew they would make a difference. Heroism!
