They didn't ALL die terribly... Lucca ran the orphanage where Kid grew up.. and Robo returned to the future to become FATE in Chronopolis. Schala technically didn't die, but got fused with a piece of Lavos to become the Time Devourer. The entire archipelago isn't even real. Cross is a clusterfuck.
