thanks, i certainly agree that foreign students need more transparency wrt working conditions, but i am specifically talking about 3rd party funded projects here where there is a disproportionate hiring of phds, so the onus should be on PIs?

unfortunately these were not based in berlin and i worry if generalisations may not apply here. I did work in an swedish think-tank with excellent working conditions. downsides of thinktanks: still more fast-paced & race for funding - i contributed to proposals even as a junior RA. Good luck!
also with the teaching loads due to the "missing middle" problem and ever shortening contracts, even at the PhD level one ends up doing 'quick research'
