I think this why like Terry Pratchett's death in disworld really hits home as he not some malevolent harbinger but a entity of the cosmos that enjoys life and is fascinated by humanity. Same goes for Neil Gaiman's ver of death in sandman.
Pratchett's Death is my fav character. He's so kind and genuine, and amusing when trying to understand us mortals xD
