We proved in the last few years that poverty is a policy choice. When pandemic-era CTC expansion expired in 2022, the child poverty rate doubled. Food insecurity also spiked in 2022 especially for households with kids.
In 2023, we decided as a society to let 13.7% of households w kids be below poverty (measured w the more comprehensive SPM) and 17.9% of households w kids be food insecure. What led to the continued increase in poverty and food insecurity in 2023?
