Vellum remains one of my favourite books of all time. Reading it as an undergrad was brain-chemistry-altering in the best possible way.

So, so good. And weirdly readable despite the structural games. Got way less award attention than it deserved, too. (and indeed if you scroll back through this thread Slow River is the only one one that won a hugo or nebula & not many others even got nominated).
