Immigration enforcement policies can have important unintended consequences in both destination & origin countries. I discuss our own research & contributions from Maria Esther Caballero, Thomas Pearson & @chrambrosio.bsky.social#EconSkytinyurl.com/26hhu3kw

There is more literature on negative deportation externalities. While these policies respond to the sentiments of many citizens in destination countries, it is an illusion to believe that deportations “solves” much if anything. Benefits are uncertain and costs are huge.

With Cova Meseguer, we show that the arrival of deportees fueled Anti-American sentiments in Latin America: dx.doi.org/10.1111/glob.12439. Such feelings can then be capitalized by populist leaders and undermines soft power of destination countries.

In Mexico, an increase of deportation threats via policies targeted to facilitate deportations are associated with an increase in homicides in Mexico, that could be due both direct and indirect unintended effects (this is an older version, published update coming soon: dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn...)

In Central America, the massive deportation of young adults that were socialized into US gang culture as kids led to a massive spread of violent gangs that haunt the region since the 1990s doi.org/10.1016/j.wo.... This violence led to new migration waves.

The German government will pass a law to facilitate deportations, called “Rückführungsverbesserungsgesetz” in our uniquely German way of naming things taz.de/!5983182 Time to mention a few of the unintended effects of deportations nobody wants to talk about:
