I was a bartender/waiter in Atlanta in my misspent youth and I was aware of the phenomenon but now 40ish years later it is really nifty to hear about this history behind it. I didn't know that until now, thank you.

I was in an indie band out of Atlanta, played a show in Gainesville 1995 when Opal hit. No hotels to be found anywhere. Drove all the way back to ATL eventually but passed through Dothan AL at dawn, one of the most haunting sights of devastation I've ever seen en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurrica...
