so interesting the fear that some buckaroos have over letting their art into the world because it is 'not perfect'. first of all it never will be. second of all the dirt and mess and truth are not problems we learn to get over and accept, they are literally what makes art great

Putting the back half of this in my notebook

A portion of a Chuck Tingle skeet handwritten in a notebook with a fountain pen sitting on top.

yeah but if my art is bad then Im a bad person... at least I think thats the mentality some of us are struggling. What gets me is I LOVE rough sketches and loose work. I seek it out the "worst" drawings from my hero's. Yet when I go to draw it must be clean and solid. Weird.

I say this as primarily a viewer of most art, but "perfect" in art is boring, perfect is all distinction smoothed away. Give me something that has an author's angry voice, or uneven detail in line and color to show what's important, the careful attention and sloppiness that creates your style.

I spent so much time not sharing my art for over 25 years out of fear that I wasn’t good enough. Now at 50 I’m at the point of what am I waiting for? I love what I do.

Muslim carpet weavers will intentionally include imperfections, because only God gets to make perfect things. I like their trot, even though it definitely isn't mine, what with all that religion.

We also have to make a ton of bad art before we can make one good art. We talk about this with art, but it also applies to like any skill or craft. I think about this a lot when doing programming. The first draft can be hot garbage.

Exists is better than perfect.

The perfect piece of art is the one you actually finish and release. If you don't feel pain at some aspect of your art, then you haven't put in enough of yourself.

I long ago accepted the 80% principle, that you should stop and release when it's 80% as good as you feel it should be. Then I revised that down to 60% after I gathered several new disabilities. Now I take the spaghetti approach and even post the scrap mess like this where I'm learning new apps.

White Bunny drawn with several wildly different brush types Producing grungy grimacing teeth on a oil paint head with perfectly circular eyes on a body made of cloud in front of a star spangled black void and red text in funky lettering reading BNUY
