My hypothesis on this would be: many Republicans, like Mike DeWine in Ohio, are passively supporting Trump. They hope the party infrastructure survives & they can pretend Trump never existed. Republicans can rationalize anything, so pretending Trump never existed would be what they try, post Trump.
