I’m travelling on India’s premium train today from Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri and the journey starts with a little buttonhole being presented to us. You don’t get that on Avanti. It’s left bang on time too.

Ooh, how lovely. When I was backpacking in India in the late 1990s, the trains I travelled on looked a bit different and I carried a length of chain and a padlock so if I wanted to sleep, I’d wrap it around me and my rucksack. I’d then wake up later, with a family sat opposite and staring at me.
